Tutu and the City

Are you already planning your outfit for the Sex and the City premiere? Did you wear a cocktail dress and stilettos to the first one, even though there weren't any straight men for miles around? Then I think you'll appreciate this:

Yes ma'am, for just $29.99 you can recreate Carrie's opening credits look with the Swan Lake Mini from Fred Flare.

I know, a tutu is pretty ridiculous. But it's also unquestionably fun to wear! When I was a little girl, I took ballet for maybe a few months, but I wore that tutu around the house for years. And even as a young adult, I get a little thrill picturing myself flouncing around in layers of pink tulle. I also really dig this outfit, from the Fred Flare website:
Let's ignore the fact that this model looks prepubescent, because a plain blue oxford with a champagne tutu is pretty brilliant. It's perfect for spring, too, when you want to bust out all your sundresses and halter tops, but it isn't quite warm enough--this outfit has the whimsy of a good spring outfit but won't expose all your deathly white skin. You could even wear it to the office, and spend the day pirouetting by the coffee machine.

Don't Tempt Me, Urban

Ok, so I tried to put these pieces into a Polyvore set, but I couldn't quite make it work. So instead, I'm bringing you 4 covetable things from Urban Outfitters in a lazy list form.

Silence and Noise Faux Leather Biker Jacket, $128
How long have I been wanting a leather jacket? A really long time. The other weekend I borrowed my friend's badass leather motorcycle jacket, and I felt totally unstoppable all night. If there had been a bar fight, or a particularly competitive dance battle, I would have jumped right in. I love the asymmetrical zipper on this jacket, and that the leather is a little broken in.

Kimchi Blue Suede Boot, $88
It's strange--when it comes to leather boots, I can't stay away from cognac brown, but when it comes to suede boots, I'm all about grey.

Chain Knot Cloche, $28
A girl would need a certain amount of joie de vivre to pull this off--the saturated blue, the gold rope, the old-fashioned cloche shape--but I'd like to think I'm up to the challenge. The color would look killer with my blonde hair, too.

byCorpus Long Sleeve Wrap Dress, $39.99
I've always wanted to be a ballerina! This veers a little close to American Apparel, but I think with some classic accessories (and no lame leggings) you can avoid looking like a victim of corporate hipsterism.

I am the best goddamn dancer in the American Ballet Academy. Who the hell are you?

I think, deep down, every girl under age 40 still wants to be a ballerina. But not the "Oh, I have deformed feet and never eat!" kind of realistic ballerina, but the Jodie Sawyer "Solo on stage to The Way You Make Me Feel and then bend down, pop up wearing red pointe shoes, completely different make up, and cornrows" kind of ballerina. Actually, maybe I just really like Center Stage.

But anyway, I was walking around Famous Footwear with my sister yesterday, because if there's one thing I believe in it's discount shoes. The goal was cute Mary Janes, but then I saw some shoes that instantly brought to mind that ballerina classic, the pointe shoe. But instead of the typical ballet flat, it had a great wooden heel! And yes, I know that real pointe shoes don't have a bow and pleating, but you can see the inspiration, right?

Online I could only find the Steve Madden Lexi Heel, $25 in store and $44.99 online, in black, but this shoe also comes in a pale pink (if you want to go very literal with the ballerina thing), and then a deep rich purple. It's kind of like the color of this dress, which I'm positively lusting over. Yes, it's way too slutty for me to ever wear in public (in addition to the deep v-neck, it's backless), but it's hot, right? And on sale from $215 to $54! I found the Tart Vixen Halter dress at Revolveclothing.com, which is the website Mindy Kaling recommended in her latest post on spats (and the less said about the spats, the better).
